Young Adult Crimes

It may be alcohol or drugs, poor judgment or simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but let’s face it: young adult crimes happen. I know what you are going through. I have kids of my own. You spend your whole life sacrificing for them, being good parents and investing maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars on schooling and/or other activities. And now this.

There are two primary problems with young people who are accused of young adult crimes.

1.

First and foremost is the trouble they are in and what got them there. There is no doubt some criminal penalties they face and they may have deeper problems which got them into the trouble in the first place.

2.

But then there are the long term and more secondary problems. Background checks, continued attendance at schools or jobs. Getting certain licenses or maintaining them. All the time and sacrifice made by you (and them) is now put into serious jeopardy by a bad decision.

Don‘t panic, here’s what to do:

  • Cool Heads Prevail

Keep calm and tell the son or daughter to stay that way and to keep their mouth shut. After all, he or she has a right to remain silent; there is no point to compromising this and guaranteeing a criminal conviction by running one’s mouth with remorseful apologies.

  • Look Before You Leap

DO NOT rush to make a deal to get this over with. What you do here may be on your son’s or daughter’s permanent criminal record. Nowadays, more than ever, a person’s criminal record follows him through life. Most jurisdictions have alternate resolutions designed to keep crimes from being on one’s criminal record. (Diversion, drug court, classes).

  • Go For The Pro!

Most parents feel compelled to help when their child finds trouble. Sometimes, the help that is needed cannot be provided by the parent. While that help may come in many forms, first and foremost is the need for a good and well connected attorney. Remember, your next move may have long lasting or even permanent impact to your son or daughter. So, get an experienced attorney.
